OH, VIENNA! | Austrian capital is stunning and may even outshine the likes of London and Paris

Vienna is one of those must-see places. It may even outshine the likes of Paris and London, as it is more charming and elegant in so many ways.

I arrived in the majestic capital city of Austria — situated on the bank of the Danube river — and I could sense that difference in the first few days of my stay. The longer I strolled through Vienna, which is a lively living museum, the more glimpses I had of the hidden secrets of this fascinating city, where modernity is blended with baroque and medieval architecture.

Vienna is a rich city with large tree-lined boulevards, splendidly ornamental streets and a collection of royal palaces.

Innsbruck, Austria’s ‘Capital of the Alps’

Innsbruck, the capital of Austria’s Tyrol region, boasts a remarkable combination of culture and heritage ranging from the medieval to the renaissance, all of which is coupled with winter sports, summer hiking, and other adventure activities.

Innsbruck emerged as a European political hub of cultural importance in the 15th century when Emperor Maximilian I chose the city as his imperial residence. Its rich architectural masterpieces, such as Hofkirche (Court Church), the Imperial Palace, and the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), are his legacy and that of his successors.

Music in the Air in Salzburg, Austria

Nestled in the alpine mountains along the Salzach River, Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the birthplace of Mozart, and the fourth largest city in Austria.

I arrived in Salzburg last July when its renowned music festival was in full swing. The Salzburg Festival takes place each summer and people from many parts of the world visit, with some returning year after year. This year the festival runs from July 20 until the end of August.

Innsbruck: Maximilian I’s legacy

Innsbruck, as the name implies, is “a bridge over the River Inn,” and has flourished as an important crossing point since the twelfth century. The town was grown around the bridge because, being nestled in the Inn valley, it provided the easiest and fastest transit route across the Alps.

Being such an obvious crossing point, many guesthouses, bars and restaurants were established to serve visitors. It brought large revenues and prosperity to the city and, today, Innsbruck has kept that importance but attuned itself to demands in the modern time in different ways.

Salzburg – Mozart’s birthplace

The city of Salzburg, (it means “Salt Castle”) is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the birthplace of Mozart and is the fourth largest city in Austria.

It nestles in the mountainous alpine foreland along the Salzach River. The setting of the old town with stylish medieval architecture and gentle decorative facades has kept the soul of the city tuned like a calm, peaceful musical composition. Salzburg is an attraction not just because of its most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, because there is music in the air in every lane and passage, but because of the diverse cultural heritage throughout the city.

The healing powers of the Gastein valley

The Gastein Valley in the heart of the Austrian Alps and south of Salzburg is a green prosperous, valley surrounded by magnificent Hohe Tauern mountain range. The valley, an ancient Roman crossroad, has seen many rises and falls in prosperity throughout its long history. It has been built on gold, silver and salt mining, the thermal waters as well as the healing caves and, today, the ski resorts.
