Insider Guide to Marrakech, Morocco

As I approached Marrakech after a three-and half-hour flight from London, my excitement grew. It was like coming to a meeting with a dear friend as that’s what Marrakech is to me. I love the city’s high red walls, the hustle and bustle of the souk, bantering and bartering with the traders and enjoying the simple but tasty food. Like me, many writers, painters & poets have been attracted to this iconic location.

Exploring the Old Medina in Fez, Morocco

From the moment I arrived in Fez, Morocco’s second-largest city after Casablanca, I felt I had entered into a completely different history and culture.

Fez largely consists of two old medina quarters, Fes el Bali and Fes Jdid, and the modern section of Ville Nouvelle with its palm-tree-lined boulevards, built in the French colonial era.

The walled medina, with its bustling souks and old-world ambience, is the jewel of the city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved medinas in the world.

Riad Star and Movenpick Hotel Mansour Eddahbi Marrakesh

Marrakesh provides accommodation for all types of travellers. But for many visitors the lure of a traditional riad is what makes the city such a fascinating place to stay. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house or palace which has survived the years and still retains its building around a courtyard or, is some cases, more than one. They have been refurbished over the years and now provide some of the best boutique accommodation you will find.

Marvellous Marrakesh

Marvellous Marrakesh

I was with my wife wondering in the maze of Medina in Marrakesh, discovering its authenticity and the never-ending beauty of an ancient city in its narrow and winding passages. It is easy to get lost in Medina and sometimes it can lead to further discovery such as finding a modern hammam in the medieval setting. Let me briefly explain what a Moroccan hammam is. Similar to a Turkish bath, these hammams are part of many Moroccans’ daily life. They are a public steam room where people go to clean themselves. This is usually a weekly ritual and is considered a social activity in villages and towns, with men, women, and children all participating.

Exploring the medina of Marrakech

Exploring the medina of Marrakech

The red city of Marrakech in Morocco is an eternally inspirational attraction for writers, storytellers, painters, photographers and film makers. The authenticity of the medina (an area of a city or town with narrow roads which is car free and can date back hundreds of years) has survived with its medieval heart largely intact despite the arrival of new modern cafés and restaurants. The refurbished and modernized riads (traditional Moroccan house or palace with a courtyard) in the heart of old medina have managed to capture the same vibe of old fifteenth century palaces by keeping their traditional architecture.

An introduction to Fez

The Moroccan city of Fez – a two and half hour flight from London – should be added to your bucket list. In just a short journey you step into a completely different history and culture.

The oldest part of Fez was built in the eighth century on the banks of the Fez River which flows from west to the east through the low hills of the Atlas Mountains. Today, much of the city is modern with many palm tree lined boulevards and wide highways circling the new Ville Nouvell urbanisation embracing the jewel of Medina.
