The Cruise Days in Hamburg – Part 2

In the morning, we had a walking tour of the city of Hamburg, strolling in the beautiful courtyards and the luxury shopping streets, reaching the highlights of the city such as St Nicholas Cathedral, Hamburg Town Hall and the Kontorhaus district. We also visited Miniatur Wunderland and the International Maritime Museum.

The Cruise Days in Hamburg – Part 1

I arrived in the city of Hamburg in September 2019 during the Cruise Days event. It was a very long time since my last visit, nearly 25 years ago, but my memory of the old town, the harbour, the river, the inner lake and all city attractions and landmarks were still fresh in my head.

A day in … Miltenberg

A day in … Miltenberg

Travel about 75 kilometres from Frankfurt is a south easterly direction and you will arrive in the Bavarian town of Miltenberg.

This charming town has a history that goes back to pre-Roman times and, originally, was just a narrow strip of land between the Main River and the Greinberg Mountain.  Needless to say it flooded regularly but the town survived although it barely grew until centuries later when flood precaution measures were put into place.

Sofitel Frankfurt Opera Hotel

Sofitel Frankfurt Opera Hotel

In any city or importance and size like Frankfurt, there will always be a range of accommodation to suit every type and pocket. Finding one that provides a little bit more than a standard hotel normally offers takes some hunting. I am not talking about extra pillows or sheets made from the finest Egyptian cotton but ambience and history.

I was quite pleased when I booked into the luxurious Sofitel Frankfurt Opera and found links with probably the most famous German writer of all, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

Visiting Kronberg Castle

Visiting Kronberg Castle

This castle is just twenty minutes away from the bustling financial capital of Germany, Frankfurt. But whereas Frankfurt seems new and commercially self-contained, the castle is a place from another era yet it is possible to easily visit the two in the same break.

Now a hotel, the Kronberg Castle took us back into the days of German royalty.

In Frankfurt during festival time

In Frankfurt during festival time

Frankfurt is widely seen as one of the great financial centres of the world but that belies the attraction to the leisure visitor. We were in the city to discover what else Frankfurt offers and to find out the city’s highlights and landmarks.

We began our tour in Opernplatz Square in front of the Old Opera House, a treasure of the city built in 1880 but which was largely destroyed during WWII. The building was reconstructed and re-opened in 1981 with the same exterior design as the original but, this time, it was fully equipped with modern technology and a sound system.

Changing Berlin: revisiting after 26 years

Changing Berlin: revisiting after 26 years

It was the summer of 1990 when I visited Berlin for the first time, shortly after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. I was on a train journey with my family from Frankfurt to Berlin and we were supposed to get off at Berlin Central Train Station in what was West Berlin. By mistake we departed at the Berlin Friedrichstraße station in East Berlin. The station looked very old but it had a very interesting style
