KOLKATA DIARY – The Effect of Cyclone in Sandarbans

 

With a significant population, India has already been facing a great task in dealing with the damages caused by the impacts of the virus and maintaining social distancing. To make matters worse, another natural disaster hit West Bengal on 20th May as the coastal areas of the states of Odisha and West Bengal suffered the heavy impacts of one of the strongest cyclones in decades. The hurricane caused by super cyclone “Amphan” destroyed fishing villages, homes, and farms, brought down the power lines, and damaged roads and highways. The high-speed winds of up to 190 Km/h caused surges in storm and heavy rainfall, raising the sea level and flooding agricultural land, farms, and towns. The poor infrastructure of Kolkata could not cope with the consequence of overflowing water in the streets. Many neighbourhoods such as Kumotuli were devastated. Homes and workshops were swamped in the flooding water. People have become both jobless and homeless

It was in October of 2019 when I was in Kolkata, India, to be a competition judge among 13 members of a jury. The International Jury Award took place during the Durga Puja festival to help review 300 hundred pandals created by local artists and artisans. The city was colourful and vibrant in the celebration of the festival, uplifted in a united spirit to bring joy and happiness to the city regardless of religion or political ideas.

In the morning, we had a walking tour of the city of Hamburg, strolling in the beautiful courtyards and the luxury shopping streets, reaching the highlights of the city such as St Nicholas Cathedral, Hamburg Town Hall and the Kontorhaus district. We also visited Miniatur Wunderland and the International Maritime Museum.

The interview with Anasha Campbell, the Minister of Tourism, about Nicaragua’s first International Tourism Fair (NICATUR) opened on 6th September 2019 in Managua. The event was held at the Olof Palme Convention Centre, in presence of 89 national exhibitors, 64 foreign tour operators, and buyers and 32 international media.

NICATUR was a successful event to exhibit the best highlights of Nicaragua, the land of lakes and volcanoes under one roof. Anasha Campbell stated, “NICATUR is a platform to showcase the attractions that Nicaragua offers in terms of natural beauties and cultural heritage, but it is also a platform for exhibitors and private sectors to get in contact with international buyers and foreign press, promoting their product and services”.

GOA International Travel Mart 2019

The Goa International Travel Mart (GITM) 2019, held at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant on 23rd October 2019. Dr Sawat met the exhibitors, international and national media, hosted buyers and investors in the tourism sectors. He reassured the government’s support and intentions to boost Goa as a vibrant destination.

The visitors interacted at the B2B sessions, heard the latest news about Goa  Tourism in the press conference and attended the Medical Tourism seminar which was presented by the medical fraternity in Goa.

The event was a grand success providing a unique opportunity for networking with the tourism stake-holders, and to showcase some of the best hospitality products of Goa to travel agents and tour operators from around the world.
